A long-time fan theory about the two games has been officially confirmed by Ubisoft.

There has been a long-time fan theory that two of Ubisoft’s open-world franchises, Assassin’s Creed and Watch Dogs, were actually part of the same universe. Ubisoft has confirmed it themselves. Since both games are made by the same developer, it makes perfect sense that there would be some overlap between the two franchises.

Developers love placing easter eggs and cameos of other games they made within the same game they made. In this case, this person is Olivier Garneau. Garneau is the Chief Creative Officer of Abstergo Entertainment, which features prominently in the Assassin’s Creed games. In Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, he has a meeting in Chicago, which happens to be the setting of the first Watch Dogs game. In Assassin’s Creed: Origins, the player can bring up a file that shows Garneau’s assassination by Watch Dogs protagonist Aiden Pearce.

What does this mean for the futures of both franchises? There may be significant crossovers between the two now that they are confirmed to be set in the same universe. There could be DLC that crosses over for both games or further cameos of Watch Dogs characters in Assassin’s Creed and vice versa. In 2014, Ubisoft Narrative Director Darby McDevitt said that the crossover idea was meant to be a joke.

However, fans did not stop digging away at the connection between the two. An IGN article highlighted how many crossovers there were between the franchises. One fan reported that you could even text Garneau himself in the first Watch Dogs game. Aiden threatens Garneau’s life via text message, ending with the phrase that Assassins say to their targets, “Requiescat in pace” (Latin for rest in peace).
